AI interview tools compared: four categories.
Updated 5 October 2026
AI interview tools fall into four groups: two-way AI interviewers, one-way or on-demand video, conversational chat and scheduling assistants, and interview intelligence that records interviews run by people. Many vendors span more than one group. This page places seven tools using each vendor's own public description.
What are the four categories?
The first category is the two-way AI interviewer. A voice or chat agent asks questions, listens, asks follow-ups, and produces a transcript and a score. This is the AI-run first round.
The second is one-way or on-demand video. Candidates record answers to set questions on their own time, and people or software review them later. The conversation does not change based on what the candidate says.
The third is the conversational chat and scheduling assistant. It answers candidate questions, collects basic screening answers and books interview slots by text, chat or messaging apps.
The fourth is interview intelligence. It records and summarises interviews that people run, so notes, scorecards and feedback reach the ATS faster. For more on the first two, see AI interview vs one-way video.

How do the categories feel different to candidates?
A candidate in a two-way interview speaks or types and gets a response that depends on what they said. That can feel like a conversation, and it lets the interviewer ask about a specific example. A candidate in one-way video sees a question, records an answer and moves on, so the follow-up never happens.
A candidate dealing with a chat assistant usually answers short questions and picks a time slot. This is quick, but it gathers less detail about the work itself. A candidate whose interview is run by a person and recorded by a notetaker has the same experience as before, and the benefit goes to the hiring team.
These differences matter for volume, language and channel. A spoken interview in the candidate's own language can draw out more detail than a form. A text exchange can be easier on a shared phone. Match the format to how your candidates actually apply.
Which category fits your hiring?
Choose by the problem. If recruiters lose time on first-round calls, a two-way AI interviewer addresses that. If you want assessments and structured video together, a broader platform may fit. If the pain is messaging and scheduling, a conversational assistant fits. If your interviews are run by hiring managers and notes are inconsistent, interview intelligence fits.
AI Interview Agents sits in the first category. A person on the hiring team makes every hiring decision, and AIIA scores and reports without rejecting candidates on its own. You can start on a free plan, with no per-seat fees, and see the sample report first.
What should you ask every vendor?
- Who asks the questions, and does the conversation change based on the candidate's answers?
- In which languages does the interview run end to end?
- How do candidates join, and do they need an app or a licence?
- What does the hiring team receive, and can you see a sample report?
- How is pricing set, and what is included in a trial?
Our guide to comparing AI interview vendors goes deeper. Write the answers down for each vendor, and ask the same questions in the same order so the comparison is fair. Where a vendor does not publish an answer, ask for it in writing before you decide. When you are ready, book a demo and bring your own job description to see how an interview is built from it.
