Interview questions to assess teamwork.
Updated 5 October 2026
Teamwork is contributing to shared results while helping others do the same. Listen for what the candidate did for the team beyond their own tasks, and how they handled friction. Strong candidates describe their own part clearly, give credit to others by name, and show how the group's result improved.
What is teamwork?
Teamwork is working with others toward a common result. The behaviours that show it are sharing information early, offering help, taking on unglamorous work, listening to ideas that differ from your own, handling disagreement politely and accepting group decisions. Teamwork is not the same as agreeing with everyone. A good team member can disagree and still support the final decision.
Teamwork interview questions
- Tell me about a team result you are proud of. What was your specific contribution? Listen for: a clear personal part, and credit given to specific colleagues.
- Describe a time you helped a colleague who was falling behind. Listen for: noticing the problem, offering practical help and not taking over.
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a team decision. What did you do? Listen for: saying so directly in the right place, and then supporting the outcome.
- Describe a team that was not working well. What did you do about it? Listen for: action taken within their influence, such as raising the issue or changing a routine.
- Tell me about a time you took on a task that no one wanted. Listen for: a willingness to do dull work for the group, without resentment.
- A teammate keeps missing handovers and it affects your work. What do you do? Listen for: speaking to the person first, with specific examples, before involving the manager.
- You join a team that already has strong habits. How do you fit in while still adding value? Listen for: observing first, asking questions, and then suggesting changes with reasons.
- Tell me about a time you worked with people from a different function or location. Listen for: adjusting how they communicated and checking understanding.
What does a strong answer look like?
| Signal | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Personal contribution | Describes what they did, and what others did. | Says we throughout or claims the whole result. |
| Helping others | Gives a specific example of support offered without being asked. | Helps only when the manager asks. |
| Disagreement | Spoke up, listened, and backed the final decision. | Stayed silent and complained afterwards, or refused to accept the outcome. |
| Sharing information | Passed on updates and knowledge early. | Kept information to protect their own position. |
How do you score teamwork fairly?
Score teamwork on what the candidate did, not on how friendly they seem in the interview. Warmth is easy to show and a poor guide, so rely on the examples of shared work.
- Ask all candidates the same questions and include one about a disagreement.
- Write what good looks like for contribution, support and handling disagreement before the first interview.
- Score every answer against that written standard before comparing candidates.
- Note the specific example, such as the person helped or the decision supported, as the evidence.
How does an AI interviewer assess teamwork?
With AI Interview Agents (AIIA), the AI interviewer speaks with each candidate in their browser and asks the questions built from your job description and the areas you choose. Teamwork is a common area to add for roles with shared targets.
When a candidate keeps saying we, the interviewer can follow up on what the candidate personally did. The report scores the answer with written reasoning tied to their words, and a person on your team makes the decision. For a ready set of questions, try the interview kit generator.
