Interview questions

Interview questions to assess conflict resolution.

Updated 5 October 2026

Conflict resolution is the ability to work through a disagreement so that the work continues and the relationship survives. When you interview for it, listen for a candidate who understands the other person's view, stays calm, aims at a shared outcome and can describe how it ended.

What is conflict resolution?

Conflict resolution at work means handling disagreements about goals, methods or behaviour in a direct and fair way. People who do it well raise issues early, listen to the other side, separate the problem from the person, look for what both sides need, and agree on next steps. They know when to ask a manager to step in.

Conflict resolution interview questions

  1. Tell me about a disagreement with a colleague that you resolved. What did you do first? Listen for: a private conversation, a real attempt to understand the other view and a concrete result.
  2. Describe a conflict you could not fully resolve. What did you do? Listen for: an honest account, a workable compromise and professional behaviour afterwards.
  3. Give an example of two team members in conflict that you helped to settle. Listen for: neutral listening, fair treatment of both people and agreed next steps.
  4. Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager about how to do something. Listen for: respectful challenge, evidence and willingness to commit once a decision was made.
  5. Suppose a customer is angry and a colleague blames them for it. What do you do? Listen for: calming the customer, pausing the blame and fixing the issue before discussing fault.
  6. How do you decide when a disagreement is worth raising and when to let it go? Listen for: a clear test, such as impact on the work or the team, and not avoidance.
  7. Tell me about a time you were wrong in a conflict. Listen for: quick admission, repair of the relationship and a change in approach.
  8. Two people on your team want different priorities and both have good reasons. What do you do? Listen for: facts from both sides, a link to the shared goal and a clear decision that is explained.

How do you score conflict resolution fairly?

Stories about conflict are easy to polish, so score on specific actions and outcomes, not on how reasonable the candidate sounds. Notice whether they describe the other person fairly, since that shows how they will talk about colleagues in future.

  • Ask every candidate the same questions, including one about a conflict that did not fully resolve.
  • Write what a strong answer includes before the interviews, such as the first step, the other view and the result.
  • Quote how the candidate described the other person, and score it on fairness.
  • Do not reward candidates for avoiding all conflict, since that is often a sign of silence instead of resolution.

How does an AI interviewer assess conflict resolution?

An AI interviewer asks about disagreements as part of the areas you choose, and listens to the way the candidate describes the other person. If the story has no outcome, it follows up and asks what was agreed and what changed afterwards.

The interview report scores the answer and gives reasoning linked to the candidate's own words, so a reviewer can see whether the story was specific. A person on your team makes the hiring decision. If you also run live interviews, the interview kit generator can produce a matching question set.
