Interview questions

Interview questions to assess communication skills.

Updated 5 October 2026

Communication skills are the ability to share information clearly and to understand what others mean, in speech and in writing. When you interview for them, listen for an answer that is organised, fits the listener, and shows the candidate checking that the other person understood.

What is communication skills?

Communication skills at work cover speaking, writing, listening and explaining. People who communicate well give the main point first, adjust their words to the person in front of them, ask questions when something is unclear, and confirm agreements in writing. They also listen without interrupting and can handle hard messages calmly.

Communication skills interview questions

  1. Tell me about a time you had to explain something complex to someone with no background in it. Listen for: a plain starting point, an example the listener could relate to and a check for understanding.
  2. Describe a misunderstanding at work that came from poor communication. What was your part? Listen for: ownership of their share and a change to how they communicate now.
  3. Give an example of a message you had to deliver that the listener did not want to hear. Listen for: a direct opening, empathy and a clear next step.
  4. Tell me about a written update or document you are proud of. What made it work? Listen for: a defined reader, a clear structure and edits made for the reader.
  5. Suppose a colleague keeps interrupting you in meetings. How do you handle it? Listen for: a private, specific conversation instead of silence or confrontation in front of others.
  6. How do you make sure that someone has understood an instruction you gave? Listen for: asking for a summary or an example and following up in writing.
  7. Describe a time you had to listen carefully to learn what a customer or colleague really needed. Listen for: good questions, patience and a result that came from what they heard.
  8. Tell me about a time you adjusted how you communicated for a different audience. Listen for: an actual change in words, length or format and the reason for it.

What does a strong answer look like?

SignalStrong answerWeak answer
StructureGives the point first, then the support, in a few sentences.Wanders through the background before reaching a point.
AudienceNames who the listener was and what they needed.Describes the message without mentioning the listener.
ListeningAsks questions and repeats back what they heard.Talks about delivering messages and not about receiving them.
Closing the loopConfirms agreement in writing and follows up.Assumes the message landed because nobody objected.

How do you score communication skills fairly?

The interview itself is part of the evidence, so note how clearly each candidate answers as well as what they say. Keep the two separate in your notes, since a polished speaker may give thin examples and a quiet candidate may give strong ones. Score the content against your criteria first.

  • Use the same questions for every candidate and give the same time to answer.
  • Write the criteria down first, such as clear structure, audience fit and confirmation of understanding.
  • Quote a sentence from each answer that supports the score you gave.
  • For roles that write a lot, add a short written exercise and score it with a fixed checklist.

How does an AI interviewer assess communication skills?

An AI interviewer holds a spoken conversation in the candidate's browser, so you hear how they explain things in their own words. It asks communication questions from the areas you set and follows up when an answer is vague, for example by asking who the audience was.

The report scores each answer and gives written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, along with a transcript you can read yourself. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic. A person on your team decides. For a live interview, the interview kit generator can build a matching set of questions.
