AI interviews for high-volume and hourly hiring.

Updated 5 October 2026

In high-volume hiring, most applicants never get a real conversation because the team cannot call everyone. An AI first round lets every shortlisted candidate answer the same spoken questions on their own time, and gives your team a scored report for each one, so people spend their time on the best fits.

What makes high-volume hiring hard?

High-volume roles are filled in waves. A store, warehouse, delivery fleet or service desk may need many people in the same few weeks, and applications arrive faster than a small team can answer them. The first round becomes the bottleneck.

  • Recruiters spend whole days on phone calls that repeat the same basic questions, so later applicants get a rushed call or none at all.
  • Candidates for hourly work often apply from a phone, in the evening, and miss a call that comes during a shift or a commute.
  • Notes from different recruiters are written in different styles, so comparing two candidates screened by two people is difficult.
  • Good candidates accept other offers while they wait for a callback, so slow screening costs you people you wanted.

Speed matters, but so does a consistent standard. When the team is under pressure, screening drifts toward whoever answers the phone first. A structured first round that every shortlisted applicant completes, with the same areas covered each time, keeps the standard steady even when volume jumps.

How does the first round work with AI Interview Agents?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) runs the first conversation for you. You set the role and the areas to cover, and the interviewer asks questions built from them and follows up on what each candidate says.

  1. Upload applications for the role. If you have a pile of CVs, you can screen up to 500 in one batch, and each is scored from 0 to 100 against your job description.
  2. Choose who to invite, then send the invitation by email or WhatsApp.
  3. Each candidate opens the link in their browser and has a spoken interview with the AI interviewer. There is nothing to install.
  4. The interviewer asks follow-up questions based on what the candidate actually said, so a vague answer gets a closer look.
  5. Your team opens the report, which has scores with written reasoning, a transcript and a recording when one is available. Your team decides who moves forward.

What should the interview cover for these roles?

Keep it short and about the work itself. Hourly roles reward reliability, clear speech with customers and teammates, and the ability to follow instructions. The table below gives example questions you can adapt.

AreaExample questionWhat a strong answer shows
ReliabilityTell me about a time you had to be somewhere on time every day for months. What did you do to make that work?A real routine, honest about obstacles, and ownership of attendance rather than excuses.
Shift fitThis role has early starts and some weekends. How would you plan your week around that?A concrete plan for travel and family, and a direct answer about availability.
Following instructionsDescribe a time you were given a process to follow that you did not fully agree with. What happened?Follows the process, raises concerns through the right person, and explains the outcome.
Customer handlingA customer is upset about a delay that was not your fault. Walk me through what you say.Stays calm, acknowledges the problem, and offers a next step instead of blaming.
Teamwork under pressureOn a busy day a teammate is falling behind. What do you do?Helps without being asked, communicates early, and keeps their own work on track.

What does your team review?

For each candidate your team gets a transcript, an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a recording when one is available. Short clips of key answers are also available, so you can hear the answer that drove a score. Every candidate for a role is asked about the same areas and scored against the same criteria, which makes it easier to compare people side by side. You can see the layout in the sample report, and the guide on how to read an AI interview report explains each part.

Where does it not fit?

A spoken AI interview is a screening conversation, so it does not replace everything. If the role depends on a physical skill, such as operating equipment or lifting safely, a short in-person trial tells you more than any conversation. If you only have a handful of applicants, a quick call from a recruiter may be simpler and friendlier. If the job is mostly written work, a work sample is a better first step. Use the AI first round where many people need to be heard and the key signal is how they talk about the work.

How do you start?

Pick one open role with a lot of applicants and run the first round with AIIA for that role only. Compare the reports with what your recruiters would have decided, and adjust the areas to cover. When you are ready to plan wider use, book a demo. For the longer discussion, read the post on AI interviews for high-volume hourly hiring.
