AI interviews for sales hiring.

Updated 5 October 2026

Sales candidates are good at talking, which makes a first call easy to enjoy and hard to judge. An AI first round asks every candidate the same spoken questions, follows up on vague claims, and gives your team a report that shows what was actually said before managers spend time on live conversations.

What makes sales hiring hard?

Sales hiring rewards confidence, and confidence is easy to perform. Managers are busy closing their own targets, so first calls get squeezed in, and the candidate who sounds best on a short call is not always the one who sells best.

  • Strong speakers can give polished answers with little detail, so the first call feels good without showing real results.
  • Claims about past targets are hard to test in a short call, because there is rarely time to ask what the candidate personally did.
  • Managers who screen their own candidates cannot compare them fairly, as every call goes in a different direction.
  • Outbound and development roles attract large applicant numbers, while senior account roles attract few but need deeper questions.

There is also the matter of consistency. If three managers each run a first call in their own way, one asks about quota, another about hobbies and a third about the product, you end up comparing three different conversations. A fixed set of areas, asked the same way of every candidate and followed up where answers are thin, gives managers something steadier to compare.

How does the first round work with AI Interview Agents?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) runs a two-way spoken interview. The AI interviewer asks questions built from your job description and follows up on what the candidate says, including when a claim needs more detail.

  1. Enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, such as prospecting, objection handling and ownership of results.
  2. If you have many applications, upload up to 500 CVs in one batch. Each is scored from 0 to 100 against the job description.
  3. Invite the shortlist by email or WhatsApp. Candidates open the link in their browser and need no app.
  4. The interviewer asks follow-up questions, for example about what the candidate personally did in a past deal.
  5. Your team reads the report with scores and written reasoning, the transcript and a recording when available, then decides who meets the hiring manager.

What should the interview cover for these roles?

Test how the candidate prospects, listens, handles resistance and takes responsibility for results. Ask for specific stories, not general views. Here are example questions.

AreaExample questionWhat a strong answer shows
ProspectingDescribe how you would find the first ten accounts to contact for a product you have never sold.A clear method, a view of who to target and why, and a plan to track what works.
DiscoveryA buyer says they are happy with their current supplier. What do you ask next?Open questions about gaps and priorities, with curiosity instead of pushing a pitch.
Objection handlingA prospect says your price is too high. Walk me through your reply.Asks what they are comparing against, ties value to their situation, and does not discount straight away.
Ownership of resultsTell me about a quarter when you missed your number. What did you change?Honest account of their own part, a specific change, and a result from the change.
ResilienceHow do you stay productive after a week of rejections?A practical routine, focus on activity they control, and learning from lost deals.

What does your team review?

Your team gets a transcript, a report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a recording when available. Short clips of key answers can be played back, so a sales manager can hear how a candidate handled an objection without listening to the whole interview. Every candidate for a role is asked about the same areas and scored against the same criteria. Look at the sample report, and read how to read an AI interview report.

Where does it not fit?

A spoken AI interview will not show how a candidate builds rapport with a real buyer or how they perform on a live pitch. For senior roles, a human conversation about strategy and the book of business is a better first step. For roles where a live role play or a mock presentation is central, use that early instead. Treat the AI round as the way to decide who deserves a manager's time, not as a replacement for meeting the person.

How do you start?

Run it on one open sales role with a healthy number of applicants. Compare the reports with how your managers would have ranked the same people. When you want to scale it, book a demo. You can also create a set of questions with the interview kit generator.
