Interview questions

Interview questions to assess integrity.

Updated 5 October 2026

Integrity is doing the honest and fair thing when it is costly or when no one is watching. When you interview for it, listen for specific moments where a candidate chose honesty over convenience, what it cost them, and how they explain their reasons without self praise.

What is integrity?

Integrity at work means being honest, keeping confidences, following agreed rules and acting consistently whether or not you are observed. People with integrity admit errors, decline to bend facts or figures, report problems through the right channel, treat people fairly and keep promises even when it is inconvenient.

Integrity interview questions

  1. Tell me about a time you told someone something they did not want to hear because it was true. Listen for: the cost they accepted and how they delivered the message.
  2. Describe a situation where you were pressed to bend a rule or a number. What did you do? Listen for: a specific refusal, an alternative offered and a report to the right person.
  3. Give an example of a mistake you reported although no one would have found out. Listen for: reasons for speaking up and a calm account of the result.
  4. Tell me about a time you were given information that was meant to be confidential. Listen for: how they protected it and what pressure they faced.
  5. Suppose you see a colleague padding an expense claim. What do you do? Listen for: a proportionate approach, such as a direct word or a report, and a reason for the order.
  6. How do you handle a case where honesty could cost the team a sale or a deadline? Listen for: a clear line they will not cross and a way to remain helpful.
  7. Describe a time you disagreed with a company practice on ethical grounds. Listen for: respectful challenge and what they did when the practice stayed.
  8. Tell me about a time you gave credit to someone else. Listen for: fairness without being prompted and a view of why it matters.

What does a strong answer look like?

SignalStrong answerWeak answer
Cost acceptedNames what honesty cost them.Describes honesty that cost nothing.
ProcessUsed the proper channel and told the right people.Acted alone or let the matter pass.
ConsistencyApplies the same standard to themselves and peers.Excuses their own shortcuts and criticises others.
ToneDescribes events plainly and without self praise.Frames themselves as the hero of every story.

How do you score integrity fairly?

Integrity cannot be proven in an interview, so treat answers as evidence, not as a verdict. Look for consistent, specific accounts and check them where the role allows, through references or background checks that follow the law and your policy. Do not decide on a single answer.

  • Ask every candidate the same questions and do not use trick scenarios.
  • Write the criteria down first, such as a real cost, the channel used and fairness.
  • Quote the words used to describe the decision.
  • Use reference conversations to confirm key stories, with the candidate's permission.

How does an AI interviewer assess integrity?

An AI interviewer asks about honesty and ethical choices from the areas you pick for the role. If an answer is general, such as a claim of always being honest, it follows up and asks for one real situation and what the candidate did.

The report scores the answer and gives reasoning tied to what the candidate said, so reviewers can see where an account was specific or vague. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, since scores here are evidence and not a ruling. For reference calls, the interview kit generator sits alongside the free reference check questions.
