Interview questions

Interview questions to assess emotional intelligence.

Updated 5 October 2026

Emotional intelligence is noticing and managing your own emotions and reading other people's accurately. When you interview for it, listen for a candidate who describes what they felt, how it affected their behaviour, how they read the other person, and what they did to keep the work on track.

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence at work means self awareness, self control, empathy and handling relationships. People who show it notice when stress is changing how they act, pause before reacting, ask how others are doing and listen to the answer, give feedback with care and receive it without defensiveness.

Emotional intelligence interview questions

  1. Tell me about a time you were very stressed at work. How did it show up and what did you do? Listen for: honest self observation and a practical way of managing it.
  2. Describe a time you realised you had reacted badly. What did you do afterwards? Listen for: a prompt repair and a change in how they respond.
  3. Give an example of a time you sensed that a colleague was struggling. Listen for: specific signs they noticed and a respectful offer of help.
  4. Tell me about feedback that was hard to hear. How did you respond? Listen for: listening first, asking questions and acting on it.
  5. Suppose a team member becomes defensive when you point out an error. What do you do? Listen for: slowing down, separating the person from the error and keeping the conversation private.
  6. How do you read how a customer or colleague is feeling in a conversation? Listen for: attention to words, tone and silence, and checking the reading by asking.
  7. Describe a time you had to stay calm while others were upset. Listen for: steady behaviour, acknowledgement of feelings and a move to practical steps.
  8. Tell me about a time you had to give feedback that you knew would be disappointing. Listen for: care in preparation, clarity in the message and support afterwards.

What does a strong answer look like?

SignalStrong answerWeak answer
Self awarenessNames the feeling and how it changed their behaviour.Says they never let emotions affect work.
EmpathyDescribes the other person's view in specific terms.Describes others only by their actions.
Self controlPaused or stepped away before responding.Reacted and then explained why it was justified.
FeedbackWelcomed it and gave an example of a change.Explained why the feedback was wrong.

How do you score emotional intelligence fairly?

Emotional intelligence is easy to confuse with likeability, so score evidence of awareness and behaviour, not charm. Be careful with bias, since different cultures express emotion differently. Focus on what the candidate did, and agree the criteria before the interview.

  • Ask every candidate the same questions and avoid personal questions about family or health.
  • Write the criteria down first, such as self awareness, empathy and a changed action.
  • Quote the candidate's description of the other person's view.
  • Do not penalise a reserved speaking style if the examples show real insight.

How does an AI interviewer assess emotional intelligence?

An AI interviewer asks about handling pressure and people as part of the areas you choose. If an answer stays general, such as a claim to be calm under stress, it follows up and asks about a specific moment and what the candidate did.

The report scores each answer and gives reasoning tied to what the candidate said, so scores rest on the examples and not on how the candidate sounded. A person on your team makes the decision. The interview kit generator can help you build a matching question set for live rounds.
