Interview questions

Interview questions to assess accountability.

Updated 5 October 2026

Accountability means owning a result, including the parts that went wrong, and acting on it without being chased. When you interview for it, listen for a candidate who names their own part in a miss, says what they changed afterwards, and does not shift the story onto other people.

What is accountability?

Accountability at work is taking responsibility for a commitment and its outcome. Accountable people say what they promised, tell others early when a promise is at risk, accept the part they played in a failure, and fix the cause instead of explaining it away. They also hold others to shared commitments in a fair and direct way.

Accountability interview questions

  1. Tell me about a commitment you missed. What happened and what did you do next? Listen for: a clear account of their own part, early notice to others, and a repair, not a list of excuses.
  2. Describe a mistake of yours that someone else found before you did. Listen for: whether they own it without defensiveness and describe how they check their work now.
  3. Give an example of a time you held a colleague to something they had agreed to do. Listen for: a calm, specific conversation about the commitment, not a complaint about the person.
  4. Tell me about a project that failed partly because of a decision you made. Listen for: plain naming of the decision and a lesson that changed later behaviour.
  5. Suppose you promised a client a date and now see you cannot meet it. What do you do today? Listen for: telling the client soon, offering a realistic new date, and proposing a plan to limit the damage.
  6. How do you keep track of the promises you have made to other people? Listen for: a concrete habit such as a written list or a regular review, not a general statement about being organised.
  7. Tell me about a time you were blamed for something that was not your fault. Listen for: a fair split between what was theirs and what was not, handled without resentment.
  8. What is the last thing you got wrong at work, and who knows about it? Listen for: willingness to speak openly about a real error and to say who they told.

What does a strong answer look like?

SignalStrong answerWeak answer
Ownership of a missSays what they did or failed to do, in the first person.Describes the miss as caused by a team, a manager or timing.
Early warningRaised the problem before the deadline and offered a new plan.Stayed quiet until someone asked about progress.
Follow throughNames a change in method that they still use.Says they learned a lesson but cannot name one action.
Fairness to othersHolds peers to agreements in a direct and respectful way.Avoids hard conversations or only complains afterwards.

How do you score accountability fairly?

Accountability is easy to fake in a rehearsed story, so score the detail rather than the tone. A candidate who sounds humble but cannot name the decision they made has not shown the skill. Agree the scale before the first interview and use it for everyone.

  • Ask the same core questions of every candidate, in the same order, so answers can be compared.
  • Write down what a strong and a weak answer sounds like before you start, then score against that text.
  • Quote the exact words the candidate used for their own part in the failure.
  • Score each candidate before you discuss them with colleagues, so one confident voice does not set the result.

How does an AI interviewer assess accountability?

An AI interviewer asks accountability questions from the areas you choose for the role, then listens to the answer. If a candidate says a project went wrong but does not say what they did, it follows up on that point and asks what the candidate personally decided or changed.

The interview report scores the answer and gives written reasoning that points to what the candidate actually said, so you can check each score against the transcript. A person on your hiring team makes the decision. You can also build a matching set of questions with the interview kit generator.
