Interview questions to assess resilience.
Updated 5 October 2026
Resilience is the ability to keep working well after a setback, pressure or a failure. Listen for what the candidate did in the days after it went wrong, and what they changed. Strong candidates describe recovery as concrete steps and support sought, not as simply being tough.
What is resilience?
Resilience at work is recovering from setbacks and continuing to deliver. It shows in how a person responds to rejection, a failed project, sudden change or sustained pressure. The behaviours are staying factual about what happened, asking for help when needed, adjusting the plan and keeping standards up while stressed. Resilience does not mean ignoring stress or working without rest, and a candidate who describes burning out is not showing it.
Resilience interview questions
- Tell me about a setback at work that affected you. What did you do in the following week? Listen for: concrete actions, such as a plan reset or a conversation, not only a feeling.
- Describe a time you received harsh feedback. How did you respond? Listen for: separating useful content from tone and making a change.
- Tell me about a long stretch of high pressure at work. How did you keep your quality up? Listen for: habits, boundaries and support used, and what they would change next time.
- Describe a project that was cancelled after you had put in significant effort. Listen for: how they processed the loss and what they carried forward.
- You miss an important target in your first quarter in a new role. What happens next? Listen for: a factual review, an honest conversation with their manager and a recovery plan.
- Your team is told that priorities have changed and your work is paused. How do you respond? Listen for: acknowledging the frustration and still moving to the new work.
- Tell me about a time you failed in front of others. Listen for: owning it without excessive self blame or defensiveness.
- How do you notice that you are becoming overloaded, and what do you do about it? Listen for: self awareness and early action, such as asking to renegotiate work.
What does a strong answer look like?
| Signal | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Response to setback | Describes specific steps taken within days. | Describes only how bad it felt, or says it did not affect them. |
| Use of support | Asked a manager or colleague for help at the right time. | Carried on alone until the problem grew. |
| Learning | Changed a habit or a process afterwards. | Draws no lesson, or blames others. |
| Sustainable pace | Describes limits and recovery alongside high effort. | Treats exhaustion as proof of commitment. |
How do you score resilience fairly?
Score resilience on the recovery the candidate describes, not on how much hardship they have faced. Do not give extra credit for stories of personal difficulty, and do not ask about health, family or personal circumstances.
- Ask every candidate the same questions and let them choose a work example that they are comfortable sharing.
- Define in writing what recovery looks like, such as a reset plan, support sought and a lesson applied.
- Score against those criteria before comparing candidates.
- Record the action taken after the setback as the evidence, and leave out any personal details that are not about work.
How does an AI interviewer assess resilience?
AI Interview Agents (AIIA) offers an AI interviewer that holds a spoken first-round interview in the candidate's browser, using questions built from your job title, description and chosen areas. Resilience can be added as an area for roles with high pressure or frequent change.
When a candidate describes a setback and moves straight to the happy ending, the interviewer follows up on what happened in between. The report gives a score with reasoning that refers to the candidate's own answer, and a person on your team makes the decision. To draft the questions yourself, try the interview kit generator.
