Interview questions

Data Analyst interview questions for the first round.

Updated 5 October 2026

A first-round interview for a data analyst should establish whether the person turns a vague business question into an analysis, checks data quality before trusting it, picks sensible methods, and explains results to people who do not work with data. Ask about real projects and the decisions they led to.

What should a first-round data analyst interview cover?

Analysts are valuable when their work changes a decision. The first round should look at how they think from question to recommendation.

  • Framing the question: how they clarify what the business actually needs.
  • Data quality: how they check that the data can be trusted.
  • Method and tools: whether their analysis suits the question.
  • Communicating findings: whether others act on what they report.

Data Analyst interview questions

Framing the question

  1. A manager asks why sales fell last month. What do you ask before opening any data? Listen for: questions on definition, period, comparison and the decision at stake.
  2. Tell me about a request you reframed before doing the work. Listen for: how they found the real need.

Data quality

  1. Tell me about data that looked wrong. How did you find out and what did you do? Listen for: specific checks such as duplicates, missing values and changed definitions.
  2. How do you deal with two reports that show different totals? Listen for: tracing each number to its source.

Method and tools

  1. Describe an analysis you did from raw data to final answer. Listen for: the steps, the tools and the reason for each choice.
  2. How would you tell whether a change in a metric is real or just normal variation? Listen for: a sensible way to compare, even without formal statistics.
  3. Which tool do you reach for first, and when does it stop being the right one? Listen for: honest limits of their preferred tool.

Communicating findings

  1. Tell me about a finding you presented to people who were not analysts. What happened? Listen for: a clear message, a recommendation and a decision that followed.
  2. How do you tell a senior person that their favourite idea is not supported by the data? Listen for: respectful, evidence first and an alternative.

How do you score the answers?

Score each area on a project the candidate describes. A candidate who can explain one project well, including its limits, usually scores higher than one who lists many tools.

AreaStrong answerWeak answer
Framing the questionClarifies the decision and the definition before analysing.Starts pulling numbers without asking what they are for.
Data qualityNames specific checks and traces differences to a source.Trusts the dashboard or averages the two numbers.
Method and toolsExplains each step and states the limits of the result.Lists tools without saying what they did with them.
Communicating findingsLeads with the conclusion and ties it to a decision.Describes charts rather than recommendations.

Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?

  • Testing tool syntax in the first round. Skills with a tool can be checked later in a short task.
  • Ignoring how the candidate checks data. Most bad analysis starts with data nobody checked.
  • Rewarding complex methods when a simple comparison would answer the question.
  • Not asking about a result that was wrong, which shows how they handle mistakes.

How does an AI interviewer run this first round?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as framing questions, data quality, method and communicating findings. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.

For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator.
