Interview questions

Account Executive interview questions for the first round.

Updated 5 October 2026

A first-round interview for an account executive should establish whether the person runs structured discovery, manages a deal through several stakeholders, negotiates without giving everything away, and forecasts honestly. Ask for specific past deals and test the reasoning behind each decision.

What should a first-round account executive interview cover?

Account executives own deals from first meeting to close. The first round should test how they think about a real deal, so ask about specific ones.

  • Discovery: how they learn the buyer's problem before pitching.
  • Deal management: how they handle several stakeholders and a long cycle.
  • Negotiation: how they protect value when the buyer asks for a discount.
  • Forecasting honesty: whether they report the state of their pipeline accurately.

Account Executive interview questions

Discovery

  1. Tell me about a deal where discovery changed what you proposed. Listen for: questions that uncovered a need the buyer had not stated.
  2. What do you need to know before you present a solution? Listen for: a clear list covering problem, budget route, timing and people involved.

Deal management

  1. Describe a deal with more than one decision maker. How did you get each of them on side? Listen for: a plan for each person and their different concerns.
  2. Tell me about a deal that went quiet. What did you do? Listen for: a specific action to restart it, or a decision to close it out.

Negotiation

  1. A buyer asks for a discount on the last day of the quarter. What do you do? Listen for: asks for something in return and holds the value of the offer.
  2. Tell me about a concession you regret. Listen for: honest reflection and a lesson applied later.

Forecasting honesty

  1. Tell me about a deal you had in your forecast that did not close. What had you missed? Listen for: a clear account of the warning signs they ignored.
  2. How do you decide when a deal should come out of the forecast? Listen for: specific criteria rather than a feeling.

How do you score the answers?

Score each area from the specific deals the candidate describes. If an answer stays general, ask for the deal and the next step before you score it.

AreaStrong answerWeak answer
DiscoveryNames the facts they confirm before pitching and gives a deal example.Describes a product demo that starts in the first five minutes.
Deal managementMaps stakeholders and has a plan for stalled deals.Relies on one contact and waits.
NegotiationTrades concessions for commitments and explains the reasoning.Gives the discount to close the deal.
Forecasting honestyOwns a missed forecast and states clear criteria.Explains it away as bad luck.

Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?

  • Asking about quota attainment and stopping there. A number without the deal behind it tells you little.
  • Letting the candidate pitch you. Redirect to what they did in a specific past deal.
  • Over-weighting industry experience when the buying process is what you need them to run.
  • Not testing how they talk about lost deals, which shows self-awareness.

How does an AI interviewer run this first round?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as discovery, multi-stakeholder deals, negotiation and forecasting. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.

For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator.
