Interview questions

Software Engineer interview questions for the first round.

Updated 5 October 2026

A first-round interview for a software engineer should establish whether the person can explain how they solve problems, writes and reviews code with care, debugs methodically, and works well with others. Test reasoning in conversation, and leave deep coding exercises for a later round.

What should a first-round software engineer interview cover?

The first round is a conversation about real engineering work. It tells you whom to invite to a technical exercise, so cover reasoning and habits rather than trivia.

  • Problem solving: how they break down a problem and choose an approach.
  • Code quality and review: the habits that keep a codebase maintainable.
  • Debugging: a method for finding the cause of a failure.
  • Teamwork and communication: how they work with product, design and other engineers.

Software Engineer interview questions

Problem solving

  1. Describe a hard technical problem you solved recently. How did you start? Listen for: how they framed the problem and the options they weighed.
  2. Tell me about a design choice you made and later changed. What did you learn? Listen for: honest reflection on the trade-off.

Code quality and review

  1. How do you decide what to test and what to leave untested? Listen for: a risk-based answer with examples.
  2. Tell me about a code review comment that changed how you write code. Listen for: willingness to be corrected and a concrete change.
  3. How do you give a review comment to a colleague who is more senior? Listen for: specific, respectful and focused on the code.

Debugging

  1. A feature works on your machine and fails in production. What do you do? Listen for: a sequence from evidence to cause, such as logs, differences between environments and a minimal reproduction.
  2. Tell me about the hardest bug you found. How did you find it? Listen for: specific steps and what they ruled out.

Teamwork and communication

  1. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a product decision. What did you do? Listen for: raising it with evidence, then committing once a decision was made.
  2. Explain a technical concept to someone who is not an engineer. Listen for: plain words and a check for understanding.

How do you score the answers?

Score each area from what the candidate actually describes. If the role has a required stack, add one line to your areas for it, and keep the same questions for every candidate.

AreaStrong answerWeak answer
Problem solvingExplains the options considered and why one was chosen.Describes the outcome only, with no reasoning.
Code quality and reviewLinks testing to risk and handles review comments constructively.Says testing is a waste of time or avoids review.
DebuggingGathers evidence, forms a hypothesis and verifies the fix.Changes code at random until the failure disappears.
Teamwork and communicationRaises concerns early with evidence and explains clearly.Stays silent and complains later, or uses jargon.

Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?

  • Asking algorithm trivia in a first-round conversation when the job is building and maintaining a product.
  • Treating a famous employer on the resume as proof of skill. Ask about their own contribution.
  • Skipping questions about review, testing and debugging, which predict day-to-day quality.
  • Using different questions for different candidates, which makes comparison unfair.

How does an AI interviewer run this first round?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as problem solving, code quality, debugging and teamwork, plus the stack named in your job description. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.

For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator.
