Operations Manager interview questions for the first round.
Updated 5 October 2026
A first-round interview for an operations manager should establish whether the person keeps daily work running, improves processes using measures, manages a team through pressure, and handles disruption without losing control. Ask for examples where something broke and what they changed so it did not happen again.
What should a first-round operations manager interview cover?
Operations managers hold the daily work together. The first round should show how they run a team, measure results and improve a process.
- Process improvement: how they find and fix waste in a process.
- Team management: how they set work, give feedback and handle performance.
- Metrics and reporting: how they use numbers to run the operation.
- Handling disruption: how they act when something goes wrong in the middle of the day.
Operations Manager interview questions
Process improvement
- Tell me about a process you improved. How did you know it needed fixing? Listen for: evidence from the work, such as delays, errors or complaints.
- Describe a change you made that did not work. What did you do? Listen for: honest reversal and a lesson.
Team management
- How do you decide who does which task on a busy day? Listen for: a method that considers skill, load and fairness.
- Tell me about a team member who was not meeting standards. What did you do? Listen for: a direct conversation, clear expectations and follow up.
- How do you handle a shift where half the team is absent? Listen for: calm triage and a plan for the key tasks.
Metrics and reporting
- Which three measures do you check every day, and why? Listen for: measures that connect to quality, speed and cost.
- Tell me about a time a number looked good and the reality was not. Listen for: awareness that measures can mislead.
Handling disruption
- A key supplier misses a delivery this morning. What do you do in the first hour? Listen for: a quick order of actions and who they inform.
- Tell me about the worst day you have had in operations. Listen for: ownership and a change made afterwards.
How do you score the answers?
Score each area on a concrete example. Strong operations candidates talk about a specific process, a specific number and a specific change, so look for those.
| Area | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Process improvement | Starts from evidence and checks the result afterwards. | Describes changes made on instinct with no measure. |
| Team management | Gives clear expectations and a practical plan for shortages. | Avoids the conversation or does the work themselves. |
| Metrics and reporting | Names a small set of measures and what each one tells them. | Tracks many measures with no action attached. |
| Handling disruption | Acts in a clear order and informs the people affected. | Waits for instructions or blames others. |
Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?
- Choosing the candidate who sounds most in control. Ask for the example that shows it.
- Skipping questions on absence and shortage, which are daily realities for this role.
- Treating a long list of tools as evidence. Ask what changed because of them.
- Not checking how the candidate handles feedback from the people they manage.
How does an AI interviewer run this first round?
AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as process improvement, team management, metrics and handling disruption. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.
For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator. For many applicants at once, see AI interviews for high volume hourly hiring.
