Interview questions to assess culture add.
Updated 5 October 2026
Culture add is what a candidate brings to a team's ways of working, such as new methods, honest challenge or a habit that improves how the group works. Listen for behaviour and values shown in real situations. Assess it only through work examples, never through personal background.
What is culture add?
Culture add is the useful difference a new person brings to how a team works, alongside the values the team shares. It is assessed through behaviour, such as how a candidate gives feedback, handles disagreement, shares credit or improves a process. It must never be judged on background. Questions about age, religion, caste, marital status, family plans, health or similar personal matters must not be asked, and they should not influence any score.
Culture Add interview questions
- Describe a time you suggested a better way of doing something in your team. What happened? Listen for: a specific change, how they brought others with them, and the result.
- Tell me about a team value that you strongly share. Show me a moment when it affected a decision. Listen for: a real action behind the value, not a list of words.
- Describe a time you disagreed with a way your team worked. What did you do? Listen for: respectful challenge and willingness to follow the group's choice afterwards.
- Tell me about a working practice you learned from another team that you brought back. Listen for: curiosity, and adapting the idea to a new setting.
- Describe the kind of feedback culture in which you do your best work, and an example of you giving feedback. Listen for: a clear preference and a real instance of giving feedback kindly and directly.
- Tell me about a time you helped a new joiner settle in. Listen for: practical help and an interest in how the new person saw things.
- Our team makes decisions by written proposal before meetings. How would you work in that style? Listen for: an honest view of adapting, and a sense of what they would add.
- Tell me about a time your work style clashed with a colleague's. How did you resolve it? Listen for: understanding the other person's method, and finding a working agreement.
What does a strong answer look like?
| Signal | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution | Names a specific practice or idea they introduced and its result. | Says only that they will fit in with anything. |
| Values in action | Gives a situation where a value shaped a choice. | Repeats the company's own words back to you. |
| Challenge | Raised a concern respectfully and accepted the outcome. | Never challenges anything, or challenges without listening. |
| Openness | Adapts to the team's methods and says what they would keep. | Insists on doing things only their own way. |
How do you score culture add fairly?
Score culture add against written behaviours, such as giving feedback, sharing credit and improving a process, and never against likeness to the current team. Judging on how much someone feels like us is a common source of bias.
- Write the team values as observable behaviours before interviewing, and score only those behaviours.
- Ask the same questions of every candidate, and keep them to work situations.
- Do not ask about age, religion, caste, marital status, family plans, health or any similar personal matter, and do not score on them.
- Score each answer against the written behaviours before you compare candidates, and quote the example given as your evidence.
How does an AI interviewer assess culture add?
The AI interviewer from AI Interview Agents (AIIA) asks every candidate questions drawn from the job description and areas you set, in a spoken conversation in their browser. For culture add, you can list your values as working behaviours, such as giving feedback or improving a process.
When an answer repeats a value without an example, the interviewer follows up for the situation behind it. The report scores the answer with written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a person on your team makes the decision. The interview kit generator can help draft behaviour based questions.
