AI interviews in English.
Updated 6 November 2026
AI Interview Agents runs spoken first-round interviews in English. The AI interviewer, Alex, greets the candidate, asks questions and follows up on each answer in real time, in the candidate's browser with no app to install. Speech recognition follows the country of the role, so a candidate in London or Sydney is heard in their own English, and a person on your team reads the report and decides.
This page covers accents, what the candidate hears, the report and what only English interviews include.
Which platform handles voice interviews in English with real-time follow-ups?
AI Interview Agents does. A real-time voice interview needs three parts: speech recognition that hears the answer, a model that writes the next question from what the candidate said, and a voice that speaks it. In the browser interview room, speech recognition and the voice come from Microsoft Azure. The model writes each follow-up from the candidate's last answer, so a short or vague answer gets a probing question instead of the next item on a list.
Most AI interview vendors run English. The differences are in how well the interviewer hears different accents, whether it asks real follow-up questions, and what the hiring team gets back. Our comparison of AI interview tools and the buyer's checklist cover those.
Does the interviewer understand British, Australian and Indian English?
English is a single choice in the role form. The product sets its speech recognition to the country where the role is, from the location you enter:
| Role location | Speech recognition set to |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom, e.g., London or Glasgow | British English |
| Australia, e.g., Sydney or Perth | Australian English |
| Canada, e.g., Toronto | Canadian English |
| India | Indian English |
| United States, anywhere else, or remote | American English |
A country named in the location wins over a city, so Perth, Scotland is heard as British English. The interviewer speaks with an American voice in every case.
What does the candidate hear?
The interviewer greets the candidate, asks its questions, follows up and closes the interview. Most of what it says is written live from the role and the candidate's answers. A few lines are fixed, e.g., when it rephrases a question it says: "Sorry, let me rephrase that. Could you tell me a bit more about your last point?" It closes with: "Thanks again for your time today, Maria. The team will be in touch shortly. We can wrap up here."
A candidate whose connection drops can rejoin within three minutes and carry on.
What is different about English interviews?
- The WhatsApp invitation. It is sent for English interviews only, alongside the email. Interviews in other languages get the email.
- Answer highlight clips, the short videos of a candidate's best answers. They are made for English, Hindi and Modern Standard Arabic interviews only.
The transcript and the scored report are in English, unless the recruiter's dashboard is set to German, French, Spanish, Swedish or Italian, in which case the report follows the dashboard.
How do you set up an interview in English?
- Create a role, leave the interview language on English and enter the role's location.
- Add your own questions, or let the product write them from the job description.
- Invite candidates by email and WhatsApp. They open the link in the browser on a phone or a computer, with no app and no account.
- Read the transcript and the scored report, then decide who moves on. The interviewer does not decide.
To interview in another language as well, create a second role. The full list is on interview languages.
