Store Manager interview questions for the first round.
Updated 5 October 2026
A first-round interview for a store manager should establish whether the person leads a team on the floor, drives sales with clear actions, controls stock and cash accurately, and solves customer problems calmly. Ask for examples from a specific store, with real situations and what changed afterwards.
What should a first-round store manager interview cover?
A store manager runs a small business inside a larger one. The first round should show how they handle people, sales and daily detail together.
- Leading the team: how they schedule, motivate and correct staff.
- Sales and merchandising: what they do to improve sales in the store.
- Stock and cash control: how they keep records accurate.
- Customer problems: how they resolve complaints on the floor.
Store Manager interview questions
Leading the team
- Tell me how you build a weekly schedule when people have different needs. Listen for: a method and a view of fairness.
- Describe a team member who was not doing the job properly. What did you do? Listen for: a direct conversation and follow up.
- How do you train a new starter in their first week? Listen for: a clear plan, not only watching.
Sales and merchandising
- Tell me about something you changed in a store that increased sales. Listen for: a specific change and how they checked it worked.
- How do you handle a slow day? Listen for: specific actions rather than waiting.
Stock and cash control
- How do you check stock, and how often? Listen for: a routine with counts and reconciliation.
- The till is short at closing. What do you do? Listen for: a calm check, documentation and the right escalation.
Customer problems
- A customer wants a refund the policy does not allow. What do you do? Listen for: a polite explanation and an alternative within policy.
- Tell me about a complaint that taught you something about the store. Listen for: turning a complaint into a change.
How do you score the answers?
Score each area on a specific store example. Managers who name a person, a day and a change are describing real experience.
| Area | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Leading the team | Uses a clear method and has direct conversations. | Avoids the problem or replaces the person without trying. |
| Sales and merchandising | Names a change and the evidence it worked. | Credits the brand, location or season. |
| Stock and cash control | Runs regular counts and documents differences. | Handles shortages informally. |
| Customer problems | Explains the policy kindly and offers an alternative. | Gives in or refuses without explanation. |
Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?
- Hiring the best salesperson without testing people management.
- Asking only about sales and skipping stock, cash and compliance duties.
- Not asking how they handle staff shortages and last-minute absences.
- Over-weighting the size of previous stores. Ask what the candidate personally ran.
How does an AI interviewer run this first round?
AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as leading the team, sales, stock and cash control, and customer problems. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.
For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator. For many applicants at once, see AI interviews for high volume hourly hiring.
