Interview questions

Accountant interview questions for the first round.

Updated 5 October 2026

A first-round interview for an accountant should establish whether the person is accurate, runs the month-end close to a schedule, understands internal controls, and can explain numbers to colleagues who are not in finance. Ask about real closes and errors they found, and what they changed afterwards.

What should a first-round accountant interview cover?

Accounting work depends on accuracy and discipline. The first round should show how the person checks their work and handles pressure at the close.

  • Accuracy and checking: the habits that catch errors before others do.
  • Close and deadlines: how they work to a fixed calendar.
  • Controls and ethics: how they respond when something does not look right.
  • Explaining numbers: how they communicate with people outside finance.

Accountant interview questions

Accuracy and checking

  1. Tell me about an error you found in your own work. How did you find it? Listen for: a specific check, such as a reconciliation, that caught it.
  2. What checks do you run before you send a report? Listen for: a consistent routine, not memory.

Close and deadlines

  1. Walk me through your role in the last month-end close. Listen for: their tasks, dependencies and timing.
  2. Tell me about a close when something was not ready. What did you do? Listen for: communication and a clear plan to finish.

Controls and ethics

  1. Tell me about a time you were asked to book something you were unsure about. Listen for: raising it with the right person and holding a position.
  2. What would you do if you found a payment with no supporting document? Listen for: stopping, documenting and escalating.

Explaining numbers

  1. Explain a variance to a manager who does not understand accounting. Listen for: plain words and the action the manager should take.
  2. How do you handle a manager who keeps submitting expenses late? Listen for: a clear message and a practical fix.

How do you score the answers?

Score each area on a real example. Accountants who can describe a specific check or a specific escalation are showing the habits the job needs.

Which mistakes do interviewers make with this role?

  • Testing only technical knowledge and ignoring the person's checking habits.
  • Treating a long list of software as proof of skill. Ask what they did in it.
  • Skipping the ethics question, which shows how they act under pressure.
  • Overlooking communication, though most of the job involves other departments.

How does an AI interviewer run this first round?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) can run this first round for you. You enter the job title, the job description and the areas to cover, and the AI interviewer builds the questions from them. For this role you might list areas such as accuracy, close discipline, controls and explaining numbers. The candidate joins a two-way spoken interview in the browser from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install. When an answer is vague, the interviewer asks a follow-up based on what the candidate said. Interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic.

For each candidate you get a transcript and an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said. A recording is included when one is available. A person on your team makes the hiring decision, because AIIA scores and reports and does not reject anyone on its own. You can read how the AI interviewer works, or build a question set for this role with the interview kit generator.
