Screening seasonal retail staff before the holiday rush.
Updated 26 October 2026
Seasonal retail hiring is a race. Hundreds of people apply in a few weeks, and the best ones accept the first offer they get. A spoken first round they can do on their phone in the evening lets you hear every shortlisted applicant within a day or two, so you can make offers before the store down the road does.
Why is seasonal hiring harder than normal retail hiring?
- The window is short. Staff have to be hired and trained before the busiest weeks, not during them.
- Volume jumps. A store that hires two people a month may need twenty in October and November.
- Applicants are often students or people with another job, so they miss daytime calls.
- Store managers who would do the calls are already busy on the floor.
The result is that the first round is the bottleneck. Applications wait, callbacks are missed, and good people take another offer while they wait.
How does the first round run?
- Set up one role per store or per job type, such as sales floor, stock room or cashier.
- Upload applications. Up to 500 CVs at a time are scored from 0 to 100 against the job.
- Invite everyone above your bar by email, or by WhatsApp if you turn it on.
- Applicants answer a spoken interview of about 15 minutes in their phone's browser, whenever suits them.
- Managers read the reports, with scores, reasoning and the transcript, and pick who to meet or offer.
Two checks that matter for seasonal staff are built in as options. The candidate location check shows where the applicant interviewed from and how far that is from the store. Joining readiness shows whether they can start when you need them.
What should a seasonal first round ask?
| Area | Example question | What a strong answer shows |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Which days and hours can you work between now and early January? | Clear days, including weekends and late shifts if needed. |
| Busy periods | Tell me about the busiest day you have worked. What did you do? | Staying organised and friendly under pressure. |
| Customers | A customer is angry that an item is out of stock. What do you say? | Calm, an apology and a real alternative. |
| Reliability | Tell me about a time you had to cover for someone who did not show up. | Turning up, helping out and telling the manager. |
| Start date | If we offered you the job this week, when could you start? | A date that works before the rush. |

What does it cost for a seasonal wave?
A 15 minute interview is one credit. If you interview 150 shortlisted applicants for a season, that fits in one month of Pro, which is 99 dollars for 200 interview credits and 5 seats. Store managers can share one account. Billing is monthly, so you can stop after the season. See pricing.
Where does it not fit?
If you hire on the spot at a walk-in event, a spoken first round adds a step you do not need. It also does not replace a trial shift or meeting the person. Use it to decide who is worth that time.
