AI interviews for founders hiring their first team.

Updated 19 October 2026

When you are the founder and the recruiter, every screening call comes out of time you need for the product and your own customers. An AI first round lets each applicant answer the same spoken questions within hours, and you read a short report on each one before you speak to anyone yourself.

What makes hiring the first team hard?

Early hires shape the company, and you have no recruiter, no hiring process and little time. The first people you add are often in sales, customer support or account management, where how a person talks to others is a large part of the job.

  • You read applications late in the evening, and a CV does not show how a person speaks or thinks on the spot.
  • A job post on a board or on LinkedIn can bring in a few hundred replies, and you cannot call them all.
  • Without a fixed set of questions, each call goes a different way and the people are hard to compare.
  • A wrong early hire costs more in a small team, because everyone feels it and there is no one to cover.

You also do not need a heavy system. You need a way to give every applicant a fair first conversation, keep a record of what was said, and spend your own time only on the few people worth meeting. That is the part of recruiting that is most repetitive, and the easiest to hand to an interviewer that does not get tired.

How does the first round work with AI Interview Agents?

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) runs a two-way spoken interview, so the candidate talks and the interviewer responds. You enter the job title and description, and the interviewer builds its questions from them. AIIA works next to LinkedIn Recruiter and the ATS you already use, if you have one.

  1. Create the role. Add the job description and the areas you care about, such as communication, ownership and how they handle pressure.
  2. Add candidates. Upload up to 500 CVs in one batch to have each scored from 0 to 100 against the job description, or invite people directly.
  3. Send invitations by email, or by WhatsApp if you turn it on. Candidates open the link in their browser and need no app.
  4. The AI interviewer asks questions and follows up on what the candidate said.
  5. You read the report, transcript and recording when available, and choose who to meet.

What should the interview cover for early hires?

Cover how the candidate thinks, how they speak to a stranger and how much they take on without being told. Ask for short, concrete answers. Here are example questions for a first sales or support hire.

AreaExample questionWhat a strong answer shows
OwnershipTell me about something you fixed at work that nobody asked you to fix.A specific example, a clear reason they acted, and a result.
CommunicationExplain what we do to someone who has never heard of us, in under a minute.Plain words, a clear order, and a check that the listener followed.
Handling pressureA customer is angry about a mistake and you do not know the answer yet. What do you say?Stays calm, owns the problem, and says what happens next and when.
Working with little structureWhat do you do in your first week at a company with no training plan?Asks questions, finds the people who know, and sets small goals.
MotivationWhy this company at this stage, rather than a larger one?A real reason tied to the work, and honesty about the trade-offs.

What do you review?

You get a transcript, a report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a recording when one is available. Every candidate for the role is asked about the same areas and scored against the same criteria, so you can compare them side by side. See the sample report and the guide to reading an AI interview report.

Where does it not fit?

The AI interview is a first screen, so you should still meet the people you plan to hire, and you will want to see how they work with you. It is not a test of technical skill, so for an engineering or design hire run a work sample as well. If you only expect a handful of applicants, a short call may be all you need.

How do you start?

Pick the one role you most need to fill and run the first round for it. There is a free plan with 10 interview credits a month, which is enough to try it on a real search. Read the first few reports next to your own view, then adjust the questions. To talk it through, book a demo. You can also read the AI interview questions for sales.
