AI voice agent for recruiting: what to look for

Oct 5, 2026 · 7 min read

VOICE AGENTVoiceFirst rounds and phone screens

An AI voice agent for recruiting speaks with candidates, asks questions about a role, and gives your team a record of the conversation. It is most useful at the start of the funnel, where one recruiter may need to talk to far more people than there are hours in the week. This guide covers what it does, where it fits and what to check.

What does an AI voice agent do in recruiting?

It holds a spoken conversation with a candidate on your behalf. It asks questions drawn from the job, listens to the answers, asks follow-ups, and then produces a transcript and a report for your team. The terms AI voice interview, voice AI interviewer and AI voice screening all describe versions of this.

The agent does not decide who gets hired. It gathers what a candidate says and organises it, so a person can review many conversations quickly instead of scheduling each one.

Where does a voice agent fit in the hiring process?

It fits at the first conversation. That is usually either a first-round interview or a phone screen, the short call where a recruiter checks basics and fit. Later rounds, such as a hiring manager discussion or a technical deep dive, still belong to people.

Teams that hire in volume, for example support, sales or operations roles, often see the most benefit. The same questions need asking of many people, and the answers need to be comparable.

How do candidates join a voice interview?

The simplest route is a link. The candidate gets an invitation by email or WhatsApp, opens it in a browser, and starts speaking. There is nothing to install. Browser interviews are available now. AI phone screening, where the agent calls the candidate, is in early access.

Ask any vendor what the candidate has to do before the first question. Account creation, app downloads and long instructions all reduce completion. Candidates who apply from a phone also need an experience that works on a small screen.

What does the hiring team get back?

You should get something you can read faster than a call. For each candidate, AI Interview Agents provides a transcript, an interview report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a recording when one is available. Short clips of key answers let a manager hear one answer without sitting through the whole interview.

  • A transcript you can search and skim.
  • Scores by area, so candidates can be compared on the same points.
  • Written reasoning that quotes or refers to the candidate's own words.
  • A recording or clips for the moments a manager wants to hear directly.

Which languages should a voice agent support?

It should support the languages your candidates actually speak in a work setting. Check this with a real test, not a feature list. Speak in each language you need, with the accent your candidates are likely to have, and read the transcript to see how much was captured correctly.

AIIA interviews can run in English, Hindi or Arabic. If your roles need other languages, ask any vendor to show a live session in them before you commit.

How should accents and speaking style be handled?

Scoring should rest on the content of the answer, not on how the candidate sounds. A strong answer given with a strong accent should score the same as the same answer given in a neutral one. Ask the vendor what the score is based on, and ask to see written reasoning for a sample candidate.

A useful test is to read a report and check whether the reasoning refers to what was said. If the reasoning talks about confidence, tone or fluency, the scoring may be rewarding delivery rather than substance. Reasoning tied to the candidate's own answers is easier to audit, and a person can always disagree with it.

What should you check before you buy?

Run a pilot on one real role. Use it for a small batch of candidates, and compare the report with your own view of each person. This tells you more than a demo.

What are the risks of using a voice agent?

The main risks are poor transcription, unclear scoring and candidates who feel talked at. Poor transcription can misread names, tools and numbers, which then affects the report. Unclear scoring leaves you unable to explain a result to a hiring manager. A stiff, repetitive interviewer leaves candidates with a poor view of your company.

You can reduce each risk. Read the transcripts from your pilot, ask for reasoning behind every score, and take a test interview yourself. Ask a few of your pilot candidates how the experience felt, and treat their answers as part of the evaluation. Also check what happens when something goes wrong, such as a dropped connection or a candidate who needs to restart. A good tool lets them continue, and a poor one loses the session and the candidate with it.

Where AI Interview Agents fits

AI Interview Agents (AIIA) runs two-way spoken first-round interviews in the candidate's browser. You set the job title, job description and the areas to cover, and questions are built from that. The interviewer listens and asks follow-up questions based on what the candidate said. Candidates join from an invitation link sent by email or WhatsApp, with no app install.

Your team gets a transcript, a report with scores and written reasoning tied to what the candidate said, and a recording when one is available. Short answer clips of key answers are available too. AI phone screening is in early access. A person on your team makes every hiring decision, and AIIA does not reject candidates on its own.

There is a free plan to start, paid plans are quoted by hiring volume, there are no per-seat fees, and candidates never need a licence. You can open a public sample report.
