Five questions to expect in almost every AI interview

Jun 5, 2026 · 7 min read

Interviews vary by role, but a few questions show up almost everywhere. Knowing them in advance lets you prepare real examples instead of scrambling in the moment.

1. Walk me through your experience with this kind of work

Keep it to the parts that match the role. Two or three relevant projects beat a full career history. Name what you did, not just what the team did.

2. Tell me about a time something went wrong

Pick a real problem, explain the decision you made under pressure, and finish with what you learned. The recovery matters more than the mistake.

3. How would you approach this specific task?

Here the agent is testing how you think, not whether you know the answer. Talk through your steps out loud, state your assumptions, and say where you would check your work.

4. Why this role, and why now?

Connect something specific about the role to something specific about your goals. Avoid generic enthusiasm. Specifics read as genuine interest.

5. What questions do you have?

Even in an AI interview, a thoughtful question shows engagement. Ask about the work itself, the team, or what success looks like in the first few months.

The pattern behind all five: a clear, specific story with you at the centre of it. Prepare those stories and the exact wording stops mattering.
